Preclinical studies with ALKS 37 demonstrated the potential to reverse the effects of opioid agonists on gastrointestinal motility by oral dosing with low systemic exposure and little to no central nervous system penetration, with low systemic exposure confirmed in the clinic. Preclinical data also showed that oral administration of ALKS 37 had a greater effect on gastrointestinal motility at a lower dose and for a longer period of time compared to an active comparator, methylnaltrexone. According to IMS Health, over 200 million prescriptions were written for opioids in 2007 in the United States. Many studies indicate that a high percentage of patients receiving opioids are likely to experience side effects affecting gastrointestinal motility

« Based on today’s announcement, LÄK-RLP (Landesärztekammer Rheinland-Pfalz, the State Medical Association of Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany) has reviewed 74 scientific articles describing clinical trials subject to the requirements of the German Medicinal Act. This includes the article by Professor Boldt recently retracted by Anesthesia & Analgesia and an article submitted by Professor Boldt to Anaesthesia but not published. By law these studies required IRB approval. Although the articles typically stated that IRB approval had been obtained, LÄK-RLP could not find evidence of approval for 68 of these articlesLÄK-RLP also identified 30 published articles that describe research that did not fall under the jurisdiction of the German Medicinal Act but physicians performing such human research must conform to the Code of Deontology, which includes a requirement for IRB review. Some articles describing epidemiological studies with non-identifiable data did not require IRB review. For six articles LÄK-RLP was able to document IRB approval. For the remaining articles LÄK-RLP has not been able to document IRB approval. According to Wikipedia, Joachim Boldt is a German anesthesiologist, and a leading colloids researcher. A Journal of the American Medical Association article published last year — which advocated for bans on health care professionals accepting no-cost food and gifts from sales representatives — might «  »have been a tipping point »" for the movement, the Times reports. The JAMA article, signed by doctors at Harvard, Columbia University and other institutions, said, «  »Academic medical centers, which include medical schools and their affiliated hospitals, should provide leadership for medicine in the United States, »" adding, «  »Research reveals that the habits learned or acquired during training persist into practice. »" Arthur Caplan, director of the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania, said a study he coauthored that was published in the American Journal of Bioethics in 2003 found «  »indisputable [evidence] that small gifts had a tremendous power in influencing favorable attitudes toward products. »" Stanford University, Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania prohibit students, faculty and medical staff from accepting «  »even small gifts, »" the Times reports. The University of California-Davis and the University of California-Los Angeles are implementing similar rules this year, and the University of California Office of the President «  »is working on systemwide rules for all of its five medical schools, »" the Times reports.

Leur but ?
